Why not join us this Sunday?
First Sunday of Advent
The Advent season begins with Gospel readings that continue the themes of the coming of the Son of Man and the Judgment of God. For the authors the end-time was thought to be very near. People can be attracted or repelled by the idea that they are going to be judged by God. The church has used the idea through the centuries to remind Christians of their responsibilities and to keep them in line by using it as a threat – the successful methodology of scaring people into heaven with the threat of hell. A strategy that no longer seems to work!
Advent is a season of tension. The church looks for the coming of the Lord, the ‘desire of all the nations’. We live with a hunger to be spoken to, to be moved, to be loved, absolved and judged. We also live with an awareness there are things we cannot do for ourselves. When no reality over us pronounces a word of judgment or a word of affirmation, how do we know we are worth judging? Advent insists we stay for awhile in the tension of the word already spoken and the new thing about to come into being. Fr. Ron Noone, Locum Vicar
