Cyclamen
Juliette Ward is a Botanic Artist living in Williamstown. She studied Visual Arts at University and had prepared an art portfolio for assessment in High School but I hadn’t sketched or painted for a long time after leaving school. Life got in the way! However, she always loved nature and gardens and started painting more seriously when she retired from full time work about 20 years ago when her child was very young. She started learning how to create botanic illustrations at the Botanic Art School of Melbourne with Jenny Phillips and Heather Rankin, two well-known and highly regarded artists. Juliette’s watercolours are inspired by readily available subjects mostly found in her garden as the most accurate botanic work is created after close study of the actual plant or fruit. Historically, paintings recorded flora for scientific study before photographic equipment was invented. Even today the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne and other gardens around the world employ botanic artists because their paintings record a perspective of plants that is not able to be captured in photographs. Regardless of the value of the record keeping, the pleasure of looking at and living with images of nature is universal. Juliette’s medium is watercolour and sometimes graphite.
